Marley Twists aftercare: first 48 hours and weekly tips

Clairemont Mesa, San Diego, CA | Marley Twists (240 minutes, starting at $200)
One of the biggest reasons people come back to me is hair health, including the client who told me I helped them restore breakage and rethink how they were treating their hair. That’s exactly why my #1 Marley Twists aftercare rule is simple: keep your twists dry and leave them alone for the first 24 to 48 hours. Let the parts set, let your scalp calm down, and let the style “lock in” before you start sweating, washing, or constantly re-styling.
Quick reminder: In San Diego’s sunny, active lifestyle, the fastest way to fuzz up fresh twists is water plus friction. Protect the first 48 hours and your style usually lasts longer.
First 24 to 48 hours: what to do so your parts stay clean
Right after your Marley Twists appointment, your scalp and your sections are still settling. I keep the goal really practical: no water, no heavy sweating, and no extra pulling. That’s how you protect the neatness you paid for.
My “first two days” checklist
- Keep them dry. Skip rinsing, steamy showers without protection, and any plan that soaks your scalp.
- Keep your hands out of your hair. Twirling, separating, and re-doing your part line is a fast route to frizz.
- Avoid tight styles. No slick high buns or ponytails yet. If you need it up, keep it loose and low.
- Sleep like you mean it. Satin bonnet or satin pillowcase, then loosely “pineapple” your twists on top so you’re not crushing them all night.
If you’re in Clairemont Mesa and you’re heading straight back out on I-805, it’s tempting to throw your hair up for the drive. Try not to. Give the style a day or two before you pull on your edges or twist the roots into a tight hold.
And yes, I’m realistic. If you sweat easily, keep a clean towel in your bag, blot your hairline, and let your scalp air-dry. Don’t rub. Rubbing is what turns “fresh” into “fuzzy.”
Days 3 to 7: keep Marley Twists neat in San Diego sun, sweat, and wind
This first week is where most people accidentally shorten their style. The twists still look full and beautiful, but little choices add up fast: too much product, too much tension, too much picking at the scalp.
If you’re doing beach days, Mission Bay hangs, or walking Tecolote Canyon, protect your twists the same way you protect your skin. Sun and wind dry out the hair and make the fibers rougher, which shows up as frizz. A hat with a satin-lined bandana underneath is a simple fix.
What I see work best: Light scalp care + gentle night protection. Heavy gels and heavy oils tend to build up, and buildup makes itching worse and parts look dull faster.
Exercise after Marley Twists
If you want the cleanest look, I generally recommend waiting about 48 hours before a heavy workout. If you do work out sooner, keep your twists loose, tie your edges down with a soft scarf, and blot sweat instead of rubbing your hairline.
Swimming and beach water
For the best hold, I like you to delay full swimming and deep washing for about 1 to 2 weeks. If you do get in the ocean or pool, use a swim cap if you can. After you get out, rinse with clean water as soon as possible, then follow with a light conditioner spray on the length. Salt and chlorine left sitting in twists is a recipe for dryness.
The weekly Marley Twists maintenance routine I recommend (no heavy oils)
Marley Twists are meant to be low-maintenance. That doesn’t mean no maintenance. It means a simple routine that keeps your scalp comfortable and your twists looking intentional.
1) Clean your scalp, not the twists
Use a diluted shampoo or a gentle scalp cleanser. Apply it to the scalp along the parts, massage lightly with your fingertips, then rinse carefully so you don’t rough up the twists.
2) Add moisture with a lightweight spray
A light leave-in spray is usually enough. Focus on your natural hair at the roots and any hair left out (if you have any). You want soft, not slippery.
3) Reset at night so frizz doesn’t “stack”
Sleeping with Marley twists without satin is one of the quickest ways to lose the fresh look. Wrap nightly. If you forget, at least switch to a satin pillowcase.
If you’ve ever searched “twists near me” or “hair braiding near me” because you wanted a style that holds up, this is the routine that protects that investment. It’s the same mindset I use for hair braids, knotless braids, boho braids, and even clients who ask me about weaves near me or wigs near me. Clean scalp, light moisture, low friction.
How long Marley Twists last (and when a retouch makes sense at 6 to 8 weeks)
Most Marley Twists last best when you plan for two phases: a “fresh” phase and a “lived-in” phase. Your hair grows, your scalp produces oil, and the roots relax. That’s normal.
Timeline I set with most clients: Edge clean-up and small fixes as needed, then a fuller maintenance plan or redo around 6 to 8 weeks, depending on your growth and how much tension your scalp likes.
If your scalp is sensitive, don’t wait until it’s painful to deal with it. Tightness that doesn’t calm down, bumps, or constant irritation is your sign to reach out. I’d rather help you troubleshoot early than have you suffer through a style you’re not enjoying.
If something feels off, tell me early (I’m responsive and I listen)
I’ve heard it again and again: people appreciate that I’m responsive, kind, and that my team listens. I take that seriously. If you’re unsure about washing, you’re dealing with unexpected itching, or you’re not sure how to protect the style for a workout, reach out and ask. A small adjustment can save the whole look.
“They’re responsive, kind, and their work is exceptional.”

If you’re coming in from La Jolla, Pacific Beach, Kearny Mesa, Mira Mesa, or University City, these same aftercare steps apply. San Diego weather is usually friendly, but the combo of sun, salt, workouts, and quick showers is what sneaks up on twist maintenance.
If you’re still deciding between braids and twists, I also keep a running guide to twists services in Clairemont Mesa so you can compare options before you commit.
Ready for your next style? If you’ve been searching “braids near me” or “twists near me, ” I’ll help you pick a size and finish that fits your scalp, your schedule, and how long you want to wear it.
